The Jordanian Women’s Solidarity Institute participated in a specialized training implemented by the International Labour Organization on capacity building and advocacy for the rights of older persons in Jordan, with the participation of representatives from civil society organizations and stakeholders working on social protection and older persons’ rights.
The training addressed a range of key topics, including the concepts of social protection, the difference between pension salary and old-age pension, as well as an introduction to advocacy tools and the national strategy for protecting the rights of older persons. It also included the presentation of international experiences in social protection for older persons, including Thailand’s experience in providing a universal old-age pension regardless of employment history.
The training included group work aimed at strengthening participants’ skills in using advocacy tools, identifying stakeholders, and designing interventions that support issues and rights of older persons.
A discussion session was also held to review the training outcomes and proposed recommendations, where emphasis was placed on the importance of forming a coalition of civil society organizations to advocate for older persons’ issues and strengthen their rights at both the legislative and community levels.
In this context, Ms. Samer Al-Jabrah from the legal team at the Institute proposed a recommendation stressing the need for a dedicated law addressing older persons’ issues under the title “Older Persons’ Rights Law in Jordan,” which would enhance the legal and social protection of this group and ensure their rights and dignity.
